The long-term goal of the Appel laboratory is to understand how the nervous system develops and how developmental abnormalities cause neurological disorders that affect children. In particular, lab members focus their investigations on mechanisms that produce neurons and glial cells from neural progenitor and stem cells and regulate myelination in response to brain activity.
